On every review list of the best gimbals for an Android or iPhone, there is always one from the  DJI OSMO manufacturers. Little wonder why. These gimbals are built with features that have granted it a 4 out of 5 stars from most users. The performance of the different models might defer but they nevertheless meet our expectations. 

The only drawback with this manufacturer is with the app; the DJI Mimo App. This app provides the best advantage for any DJI OSMO user but it has some problems that could make one consider using another app or the gimbal without an app. These problems are not a total put-off and can be worked with but if you still choose not to use the app, that’s fine.

The real connection of an app with the gimbal is for the smart features. Connecting an app to a gimbal allows you to use the hidden features of a gimbal. The connection could be via Bluetooth or WiFi. Connecting an app to a gimbal is one of the simplest things to do with a gimbal.

Although the joysticks can still serve as a substitute for the app, using the app provides you with a wide range of control. Buttons such as the record button, lock angle button, and home buttons can be found on the joystick but the digital zoom button cannot. This button allows you to clearly zoom in and out of the image you are trying to capture. You can also use the joystick to change from landscape to portrait and the sleep mode. So basically, the basic buttons for the use of a gimbal can be found in the joystick. 

Making a video or taking pictures without using the gimbal app is just using the built-in camera controls. Using the gimbal alone causes you to lose some of the features that could make your work look exceptional.

Without the app, using the DJI OSMO Mobile 3 is possible but it limits your options. There will be no or very little access to the smart features of the app. However, on the joystick of the gimbal are buttons. These buttons can be used in place of the app. This does not promise to create the experience you expect though. 

To use the DJI OSMO Mobile 3 without an app, here are some instructions you might want to know and follow. 

  • To tilt your mobile phone, move the joystick vertically
  • To pan, move it horizontally
  • For the M button, It can be used for stand by, power off, power on, battery status, and switch mode. 
  • To power on or standby, press and hold until you hear a beep
  • To power off, press and hold until you hear two beeps
  • To check battery status, power off and press once. 
  • To switch mode, press once to switch between photo or video
  • To switch to landscape or portrait, press twice
  • To enter or exit stand by mode, press thrice
  • The zoom slide button can be pushed up or down to zombie in and out
  • Push the slider to the “T” position to increase the size of the object’s focus
  • Push to the “W” position to shrink it
  • Press the trigger option once to enter lock mode
  • Press once and hold to enter sport mode. In the sport mode, the following a peed of the gimbal is increased. Release to exit the sports mode
  • Press thrice to switch between the front camera and the back camera.
